Los Angeles Clean Tech Calendar 2012 – September

Welcome to the September 2012 Clean Tech Calendar of events for southern California. This Calendar is provided by Green LAVA – the Strategic Interest Group of the Los Angeles Venture Association dedicated to exploring and explaining regional clean and green technology, business and trends.

August 21 – Clean Energy and National Security Panel – The Truman National Security Project is a national security leadership institute, the nation’s only organization that recruits, trains, and positions a new generation of progressives across America to lead on national security.  Operation Free is a nationwide coalition of veterans that recognizes climate change and oil dependence pose serious threats to US national security. We believe it is our duty to protect America by advocating for clean, domestic energy production.  Tom Bradley Center, Downtown Los Angeles, 7 – 8 PM.

August 22 – PortTechLA commercialization center and incubator program will host a mentor, coaching and mock judging of investor pitches for clean technology companies developing innovative products or services.  Companies interested in being considered for the Sept 5th PortTech EXPO Pitch Competition in San Pedro must attend the mandatory coaching session and mock judging.  Registration is available at the PortTechLA website.  From these sessions, ten start-ups and emerging growth companies will be selected to present at the Pitch Competition.  SBDC office, 4900 Conant, Bldg 2, 90808.  11 AM – 3 PM.

August 28 – 29 – Women in Green Forum  (WIGF) will bring together renowned female professionals from the sustainability field to highlight women’s impact on the environmental arena, promote sustainable products and emerging green companies, and provide opportunities for women to learn about careers in sustainability. The event will attract an international audience focused on environmental issues, including academic researchers, business experts, energy analysts, and technology developers. Sheraton Delfina, Santa Monica.

Sept 4 – Clean Technology Council’s First Tuesday event will present “How Your InternetPresence can contribute to a Green Economy.”  The “Sites for Friends” team creates powerful, easy to maintainwebsites for clients like The Revenue Watch Institute, Solarbuzz, Red HatSociety and Fretted Americana. Sept 5 – PortTech EXPO 2012 Entrepreneur Showcase and Pitch Competition.  The opening evening of the 3rd Annual conference, ten firms will present to a panel of investors, business executives, mentors and service providers.  Attendees will have access to the competition, great networking and opening night reception.  Prizes include commercialization services from PortTech Los Angeles.  DoubleTree Hotel, San Pedro, 5 PM – 8 PM.

Sept 6 –  PortTech EXPO 2012 General Sessions – welcomes community and industry leaders, technology entrepreneurs, university researchers, and investors to workshops, exhibits, panel sessions, keynote address, luncheon, prize presentations to Pitch Competition winners and great networking opportunities.   The 3rd Annual EXPO will focus on products and services, issues and opportunities for enterprises and entrepreneurs with emphasis on trade, transportation and logistics.  EXPO program panel sessions include:  Financing Technologies for Ports and Beyond; Labor Opportunities Enabled by New Technologies; and Environmental Technologies for a Sustainable Future.  The day’s highlights include California Energy Commissioner Carla Peterman’s keynote address, a SBIR/STTR workshop with Dr. Marie Talnack, media debut of Class 8 electric vehicles and exhibition space.  DoubleTree Hilton, San Pedro, 8 AM – 3 PM.

Sept 10 – Registration deadline for ECO EXPO ASIA, Oct 27-30 – Organised by the HKTDC and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd., Eco Expo Asia takes place at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE), the fair is an international trading platform showcases the latest innovations in environmental protection industries from around the world. It is also a premier venue for environmental professionals from commercial, governmental and non-governmental spheres to meet and make quality business contacts. Asia World-Expo – Hong Kong

Sept 12 – 13 – Silicon Beach at USC – The rise of technology startups in the Los Angeles area, combined with the unique access to Hollywood’s entertainment studios and creative talent, is creating a new hub for entrepreneurship. Industry leaders are increasingly referring to this intersection as “Silicon Beach” and the University of Southern California will play a significant part in shaping a vision for its future. Sept 13 – 14 – Water Innovation Summit – Looking at the years ahead, we foresee that 1) water pricing will increase to more realistic levels, 2) hidden costs will start to become more visible – especially to corporations and 3) businesses will start sweating the risks to reputation, product quality, up-time, and supply chain.  An invitation-only one and a half day summit – East Bay, CA.

Sept 18 – Clean Tech OC – the 3rd Annual Conference will feature keynote speaker Richard Kauffman, Senior Advisor to the United States Secretary of Energy, and distinguished speakers on topics ranging from the state of the cleantech industry, to water technologies, to the latest in smart grid developments, and more.  Irvine Hyatt Regency, 8 AM – 5 PM.

Sept 18 – Nicki Ung, the Executive Director of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles and a GEEP Partner,  presents “Jump Start Your Business – Connecting Small Business with Utility Powerhouses.”  If you are interested in attending, it’s a free entry for GEEP clients.  This is a great opportunity for GEEP cleantechs to meet with state/utility level personnel and entities furthermore SoCal Edison is looking for GEEP companies/industries in the following areas: LEED, hydrotesting, construction, gas material distribution, transportation and environmental environmental services – email directly to this address  info@lachinesechamber.org and indicate that you are a GEEP Client/Supporter.  San Gabriel Hilton in San Gabriel, CA  6:30 p.m. – 8:30

Sept 25 – Clean Tech Survival Strategies – Public Policy Forum – CONNECT, in partnership with K&L Gates, has assembled a top level panel of industry and advocacy experts to shed the spotlight on how clean tech companies can navigate today’s changed world of government financing structures including: local, state and  federal incentives, loan guarantees, tax credits and cash grants and current trends in strategic partnering and investment.  Sanford Consortium, La Jolla, 9 – 11 AM

Sept 27 – 28 – Renewable Energy Finance Forum (REFF-West) returns to the Bay Area to cover a range of renewable and clean energy technologies, with a particular focus on developments in the Western US.  Topics covered at REFF-West include project financing, venture capital, renewable power generation, emerging commercial technologies, financing smaller projects, equity financing and established technologies. Sept 28 – Registration deadline for October 30-November 11, 2012 California Clean Tech Trade Mission to China (Hong Kong, Chengdu, Qingdao, Nanjing, Yixing and Shanghai).  The Clean-Tech Mission will take up to 10 California suppliers of renewable energy, pollution control, and green building products or services to six major Chinese cities with huge environmental needs. In pre‐arranged sessions and site visits, Mission members will have opportunities to meet with interested buyers and distributor, learn about clean-tech developments and projects, and make sales and technical presentations to local and provincial decision‐makers. On‐site support will be provided by staff from the El Camino College Center for International Trade Development, U.S. Department of Commerce, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT).
