Award Winners from 2012 PortTech EXPO

Winning companies receive up to six months of access to

PortTechLA mentors, consultants and business services

 

SAN PEDRO, CA, September 13, 2012 – PortTech Los Angeles wrapped up an exciting two-day EXPO by announcing the winners of the PortTechEXPO Pitch Competition. Ten entrepreneurs gave eight-minute venture pitch presentations to a panel of local venture capitalists, an angel investor and business service providers.

 

Each CEO was evaluated on their clean technology product, business model and likelihood of obtaining financing. Winners receive up to six months of PortTechLA services, which include mentoring, networking opportunities, marketing consultations, business advice and access to angel investors and early-stage venture capitalists.

 

The winners are:

  • Seth Seaberg, CEO of TREXA based in Marina Del Rey, CA, won the Most Innovative Technology Award for the company’s Geodrone, an electric unmanned ground vehicle that provides 24-hour security services without generating CO2 emissions.
  • Steve Kuzara, CEO of Vyykn based in Eagle, ID, won the Best Business Model Award for building a computer controlled drinking water purification system, which saves companies money by providing employees filtered water and offers a trendy clean water option without plastic bottles for the general public.
  • Jason Caplan, CEO of EnSolve Biosystems based in Raleigh,   NC, won the Most Likely to Obtain Financing Award for the company’s biofilters that cost-effectively purify oily bilge water on ships helping prevent the largest source of oil pollution in the oceans today.
  • Steve Colome, CEO of EcoPAS based in Irvine, CA, won The People’s Choice Award for providing innovative science solutions for the wine industry to meet regulatory emission-reduction targets for organic vapors released during fermentation.
  • Exhibitors Marine Oil Technology (MOT), based in Los Angeles, CA, a company that manufactures and assembles an oil processor that cleans oil in engines and hydraulic systems, and Sustainable Now Technologies (SNT) were runners-up for the People’s Choice Award.

 

“Participating in PortTechLA’s pitch competition and working with the coaches helped me hone and sharpen my pitch,” said Steve Colome, CEO of EcoPAS. “Now I feel much more prepared and confident about moving forward and meeting with investors.”

Potential investors also met with entrepreneurs during the conference, including PortTechExpo’s Corporate Sponsor Siemens. Lee Ng, Director of Venture Technology for Siemens Technology-to-Business Center (TTB), visited with exhibitors and PortTechLA customers researching clean technologies that are good matches for Siemens’ business strategies.

 

“PortTechEXPO provides clean tech entrepreneurs a chance to network with potential investors, customers and business partners,” said Jeff Milanette, Executive Director of PortTechLA. “We are already pursuing new opportunities the EXPO created to connect our clients with funding and long-term business relationships.”

 

More than 250 people attended the PortTechEXPO, which featured clean technology exhibitors and panel discussions on the environmental and economic potential of new clean technologies. Displays included TransPower’s Class 8 electric drayage vehicle and yard tractor, a UPS hybrid delivery truck and a diesel tractor outfitted with the International Metals & Energy Technology (IMET) Diesel Particulate Filter system that meets California air quality standards.
