Welcome to the September 2013 Clean Tech Calendar of events for southern California. This Calendar is provided by Green LAVA – the Strategic Interest Group of the Los Angeles Venture Association dedicated to exploring and explaining regional clean and green technology, business and trends.  Lots of great events upcoming – Women in Green Forum, PortTech EXPO, Energy Storage North America and several large Solar conferences.  

August 25 – 29 – SPIE Solar Energy and Technology Conference  focused on the development of new solar-based energy sources, systems, and technologies and the latest research in thin film solar technology, concentrators, reliability, solar hydrogen, next-generation cell technology, laser materials processing, organic photovoltaics, and more.  San Diego Convention Center

August 27 – Please join Glaser Weil and YPE LA for  The Water-Energy Connection  and presentations by Jeff Kightlinger, General Manager for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, and David Nahai, former CEO an General Manager for the Department of Water and Power, on the crucial connection between water and energy in California.  Glaser Weil, Century City, 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

August 28 – The goal of the 2013 Women In Green Forum (WIGF) is to create a venue for sustainability professionals to develop the skills necessary for professional success, to promote women’s leadership across the environmental industry, and to provide insightful approaches and innovative ideas to solving today’s environmental challenges.  Luxe Sunset, 8 AM – 6:30 PM

August 28 – The Social Reception at the Ocean Institute – Join Clean Tech OC for a relaxed evening at the Ocean Instite in Dana Point. This beautiful venue opens its exhibits to us privately for our gathering. In addition this year, we are honored to have the Ocean Institute’s President, Dan Stetson, speak to us about the various initiatives facing the organization.

Sept 10 – PortTech EXPO Pitch Competition – the lead-in to the annual conference features clean tech entrepreneurs from all over the country.  Last year’s winner included EcoPAS (pollution control technology), TREXA (configurable electric vehicle platform) and Ensolve Biosystems (bio-based water/oil separator).  This year’s crop of candidates include clean engine technology, personal transportation vehicles, energy efficiency, solar energy platforms and incident response equipment.  This event is invitation only – contact PortTech to apply for admission.  2:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Port of Los Angeles Administration Building.

Sept 10 – 11 – Water Innovation Summit  Now is the time to start thinking about  and doing something about investment into smart water technologies and infrastructure.  Looking at the years ahead, we foresee that 1) water pricing will increase to more realistic levels, 2) hidden costs will start to become more visible – especially to corporations and 3) businesses will start sweating the risks to reputation, product quality, up-time, and supply chain.  By invitation, Claremont Hotel Club and Spa, Berkeley

Sept 11 – PortTech EXPO – the only maritime oriented clean technology conference and exhibition on the West Coast this year.  The 4th Annual EXPO will present demonstrations and information from 100+ sponsors and exhibitors; attract 500+ attendees; include keynote addresses by Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Mario Cordero and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; a Focus on Energy panel discussion presented by the Port of Long Beach; and Clean Tech, Cool Tech – a free public afternoon event that welcomes the residents of the surrounding communities to learn about clean tech and the companies that produce the products/services and technology that improves environmental quality in their neighborhoods.  Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM; Clean Tech, Cool Tech,  2:00 PM – 6:00 PM.

Sept 12 – Energy and Water Nexus Summit #2 – explores the developments, challenges, innovations and considerations around energy and water in Northern California.  Conservation and storage, desalination and energy development are essential and timely issues related to providing, managing, pricing of water for Northern California residential, farming and industrial uses.  The Aquarium of the Bay, San Francisco, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Sept 16 – CleanTech OC 2013 is the fourth annual conference and expo promoting economic growth in the Orange County clean technology industry, likely to be one of the most significant engines for job growth over the next decade.  Attended by cleantech entrepreneurs & industry leaders, investors, policy makers, and many others, this is the only annual conference in Orange County dedicated to covering the clean technology space and connecting industry stakeholders from throughout the region & state.  Hyatt Regency, Irvine, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Sept 16 – 17 – The American Council on Renewable Energy presents the Renewable Energy Finance Forum – West, the nation’s largest annual event for renewable energy finance.  REFF-West has been uniting senior financiers, investors and clean energy executives from across the US each year since 2008.  Covering a range of renewable and clean energy technologies, with a particular focus on developments in the Western US, topics covered at REFF-West include project financing, venture capital, renewable power generation, emerging commercial technologies, financing smaller projects, equity financing and established technologies.  Four Seasons, San Francisco.

Sept 18 – Solar does not have to be Unsightly – The Clean Technology Council’s monthly event will feature Mike Mrozek, CEO and Paul Wise, COO of Colored Solar.  The two inventors established Colored Solar at the Ventura Ventures Technology Center to design and manufacture high quality photovoltaic systems in the US that are competitively priced, have high efficiency and longer life.  They will discuss:   What is slowing down solar growth? Can US solar manufacturers compete?  How do colored solar panels perform?  Total Wines Conference Room, Thousand Oaks, 5:30 – 7:30 PM

Sept 22 – 25 – IOA and IUVA World Congress and Exhibition will showcase leading edge technologies for Aquarium use, Municipal water, Municipal wastewater, Food processing and Industrial process applications with special attention to both Ozone and UV Technologies.   Mirage, Las Vegas.

Sept 23 – 24 – 5th Concentrated Photovoltaic Summit is the leading concentrated photovoltaic event in the US this year, don’t miss your chance to come together with the entire CPV community over 2 information and networking packed days.  There are a number of challenges and opportunities facing the concentrated photovoltaic industry this year.  Observers are looking to see if CPV can reduce its costs and become more competitive, while companies focus on technical innovation to ensure that CPV can turn its potential into a market force.  Hyatt Place, San Jose.

Sept 24 – 26 – 6th Annual Utility Scale Solar Summit  the primary business hub where decision–makers come each year to move the utility scale solar sector forward. This networking event is the place where the entire utility scale solar community gathers to get the latest insights into the market and to meet the key players.  This year’s Summit will focus on the key trends impacting the utility scale sector and what they mean for the future of the industry. Sept 25 – 26 – 4th Annual Utility Scale PV Plant Optimization Summit.  In spite of huge growth in 2012, utility scale solar is not yet seen to be competitive outside of subsidies. With some states coming very close to fulfilling their renewable portfolio standards, developers, EPCs and suppliers are working harder than ever to reduce costs and increase yield. To help them achieve this Utility Scale PV plant Optimization conference is back for its 4th year!  Hyatt Place, San Jose.

Sept 30 – Oct 3 – Plug-In 2013   Sales are accelerating, but questions remain about technology costs, market evolution, consumer education and infrastructure development.  Plug-In 2013 will bring together key industry stakeholders to discuss, debate and, ultimately, answer these questions and more, such as:  What is the current thinking on technology and policy?  What have we learned over the last three years – where do we think the electric highway is taking us?  What is the current risk assessment? What are the risks and value propositions today and what will they be in the next three to five years? How do we sell a new value proposition?  San Diego Convention Center, San Diego
