For the last 5 years PortTech has been running an Entrepreneur Pitch Competition.  The Pitch Competition is the kick-off to the annual PortTech EXPO – the largest maritime oriented cleantech conference and exposition on the West Coast.  In that time we’ve screened hundreds of cleantech entrepreneurs and early stage companies and featured approximately 50 companies in the competition.  Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 PortTech Pitch (#PortTechPitch).

The goal of the program is to present the best cleantech start-ups from all over the world.

The competition always attracts a diverse set of promising cleantech start-ups from security scheduling apps to oil/water separation devices.  The winners from 2013 were:

  • ARES (Advanced Rail Energy Storage) North America received the grand prize for a grid-scale energy storage technology that uses electric locomotives and the power of gravity to generate and store green energy. This technology provides a clean, economical and efficient land-based solution to overcome the challenge of storing renewable energy such as wind and solar.
  • Bright Light Systems received the Best Business Model Award for the company’s energy-efficient, durable plasma lighting technology with wireless capabilities. With 15 new customers, Bright Light Systems is already on a path to success by providing high-quality, high-mast lighting to large-scale facilities such as the Navy, Army and ports.
  • Egological Mobility received the Best New Technology Award for the world’s most compact electric scooter, which is capable of traveling 20 miles on a single charge, is light enough to carry on the bus and is perfect for the first and last mile of a commute.

Go to:  PortTech Pitch and register (a simple e-mail to the organizer).  There is no cost to participate other than time, effort and desire to improve the way you present your business to investors, partners or customers.   After registering, you will be contacted and asked to supply some collateral – a business model canvas or Exec Summ or current pitch deck or marketing plan.  And the competitors will be scheduled to present a brief (90 second – 2 min) fast pitch that will be done via Skype or AnyMeeting.

Semi-finalists will be selected and invited to perfect their pitch with a group of mentors and coaches with decades of experience with start-ups, sustainable design, clean technology, product development, fund raising and presentations. These intensive sessions with one-on-one interactions and direct feedback will be conducted at the PortTech Training Center or remotely via video conference.  From these interactions with the mentors and coaches, 8 – 10 finalists will be selected to present to a judging panel of investors, industry experts and environmental specialists on Sept 16th.

Awards will be presented the following day during the luncheon at the 5th Annual PortTech EXPO.
