Los Angeles Cleantech Calendar 2014 – August

Green LAVA   Welcome to the August 2014 Cleantech Calendar of events of interest to entrepreneurs, start-up executives, investors, service professionals and community leaders around Southern California.  These are the events, conferences and programs that focus on clean energy, sustainable development, reducing environmental impacts and highlighting progress.  Check back periodically for updates.  Though a traditionally light mid-summer schedule, August still has some outstanding programs including:  The Women in Green Forum, the First California Adaptation Forum, CTC’s Unmanned Aircraft Controversies and Opportunities.

July 23 – The California Energy Efficiency Industry Council’s (CEEIC) Smart Grid Integration Symposium is a morning event focused on bringing together the energy policy and sustainability-interested tech community to explore opportunities for increased collaboration and partnerships.  EPRI, Palo Alto, 9 AM – 2 PM

July 25 – Last day to register for the #PortTechPitch.  The Pitch is instruction and practice in the art of presenting a start-up team’s business or services in a way most likely to result in converting customers, securing partners and fund raising.  Pitching is a fundamental skill required by start-ups to secure the resources required to develop and deploy their devices, systems and platforms.  Many participants in other competitions (e.g. Cleantech Open) have found the Pitch to be excellent means to improving their ability to explain and promote their business to appropriate audiences.  Register now at PortTech Pitch.  The Pitch will be held Sept 16 at the Plaza, Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro.

July 29 – EPIC Grant Solicitation Workshop – the California Energy Commission staff will conduct a workshop to share information and answer questions about the Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) grant solicitation process. Attendance at this workshop will provide potential applicants with useful information for completing grant application packages, but is not required to participate in EPIC solicitations.  Gardena City Counsel Chambers, 1:00 PM

August 4 – 6 – The Association for Energy Service Professionals presents the AESP Summer Conference and Expo.  At this conference, you’ll hear from various experts who have “been there, done that,” and will share their experiences, results and, most importantly, lessons learned so you can map your plan for success. But equally as important, we’ll also focus on strategies to integrate evaluation and implementation into the process to achieve incrementally better outcomes.  Westin St. Francis, San Francisco

August 5 – Building on the success of Greentech Media’s inaugural conference in 2013, NextWave 2014 will move beyond establishing a thesis for successful investing in clean energy technology and services to deeper dives into areas where activity is most pronounced – solar power, the ongoing disruption of the electric utility business model, cleanweb, and clean energy project finance. SRI International HQ, Menlo Park, 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM

August 5 – 6 The Geothermal Energy Association hosts the National Geothermal Summit – the leading forum for western state policy discussions, bringing together policy leaders, utilities and industry professionals to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the industry.  Topics to be covered include moving geothermal forward in Nevada, utility perspective on renewable portfolio standards and geothermal, the future of the RPS, political and tax experts discuss federal and state legislation to support geothermal, achieving the potential of the Salton Sea and Salton Sea Restoration Initiative, and regulatory matters including leasing, permitting and sage grouse.  Grand Sierra Resort & Casino, Reno, NV.

August 13 – The Clean Technology Council presents “Unmanned Aircraft Controversies and Opportunities” with Kate Styers, Principal Analysts at Tecolote Research Inc.  Unmanned Aerial Vehicles have demonstrated the potential for providing beneficial and useful applications to society. It has also generated public concern. To be successful, the technology must fulfill a variety of applications, legal oversight, political acceptance, economic practicality and public acceptance. We will explore today’s legislation, standards and requirements as well as provide insight into developing a plan for informing the public, increasing awareness and stimulating involvement and acceptance.  Come meet entrepreneurs, sustainability CEOs, and energy experts. Total Wine Conference Center, Thousand Oaks, 5:30 – 7:30 PM

August 17 – 21 – SPIE Optics and Photonics 2014 is the largest international, multidisciplinary optical sciences and technology meeting in North America.
