Los Angeles Cleantech Calendar 2014 – October

Green LAVAWelcome to the October 2014 Cleantech Calendar of events of interest to entrepreneurs, start-up executives, investors, service professionals and community leaders around Southern California.  These are the events, conferences and programs that focus on clean energy, sustainable development, reducing environmental impacts and highlighting progress.  Check back periodically for updates.  Some good shows still on the calendar for the end of September including:  the PortTech Pitch and EXPO, CTC Event on Water Desalination, the inaugural Graphene World Summit.  And October events include the Southern California Energy Summit, Demand Response World Forum and the unique and wonderful STEAM Carnival.

Sept 15 – 16 – The inaugural Graphene World Summit will focus on bringing together the scientific and business communities for technical collaboration, scientific exchange, and the successful development and commercialization of graphene and potentially other 2-D materials.  Planned sessions are designed to amplify and clarify the role of graphene in the future.  These sessions include the global path to standardization, innovation and commercialization; investment strategies; material development and production case studies; and game-changing applications and commercialization success stories.  Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley

Sept 15 – 17 – The Asia Pacific Resilience Innovation Summit and Expo (APRISE2014) convenes business, technology and policy leadership to examine the resilience in energy, agriculture, water and security.  APRISE joins with the 2014 Innovation Challenge programs – Defense Energy Challenge, Pacific Agriculture Innovation and Islands Innovation – and brings together global government leadership and hundreds of corporate executives to discover innovative technology and best practice solutions for Energy, Agriculture and Security.  Hawaii Convention Center, Honolulu, Hawaii

Sept 16 – The PortTech Pitch concludes a the summer long program with the Final Presentations of cleantech start-ups.   The Pitch recruits cleantech teams from all over the globe, conducts business and presentation workshops and culminates in a set of final team presentations before a panel of judges – investors, service professionals and environmental specialists.  Attendance by invitation only.  Use the contact info in the link to request an invitation.  The Plaza at Cabrillo Marina, San Pedro, Reception at 4:00 PM; Presentations begin at 5:00 PM.

Sept 16 – 17 – The 7th Annual Renewable Energy Finance Forum – West (REFF-West) is the premier West Coast renewable energy finance event, uniting senior financiers, investors, and renewable energy executives from across the country since 2008.  With a focus on renewable energy development in the Western U.S., REFF-West will highlight financing trends for renewable power, clean technologies, and transportation; assess the future of federal and state policy and the role of financing innovations; identify early-stage investment opportunities; and discuss the region’s role in the international renewable energy marketplace. Sept 16 – 18 – The 16th Annual OLEDs World Summit  is the longest-running, preeminent technical and business event dedicated exclusively to the OLEDs industry – connecting researchers with customers and manufacturers in both the lighting and display sectors.   The OLED industry is growing exponentially, with more and more novel applications being developed for commercial use. The 2014 edition of the OLEDs World Summit will continue to focus on large displays and flexible devices, but also explore some of the more promising technologies currently in development, and help define a path towards commercialization.  Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley

Sept 17 – The 5th Annual PortTech EXPO  is the largest maritime oriented cleantech conference on the West Coast this year.   The EXPO is a showcase for innovative clean technology and panel discussions about the trends within and opportunities for technology that enables operators and enterprises to address challenges with energy, safety, security, cargo handling, transportation and environmental impacts.  The EXPO attracts a large, diverse audience: maritime executives, port authorities, thought leaders, community and government officials, policy analysts, regulators, entrepreneurs, investors, service professionals, academics and students.  CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles, 8:00 AM – 3:00PM.

Sept 23 – 24 – The Cleantech Group presents Water Innovation Summit 2014 – an exploration of technology and business model innovation in the water and wastewater sectors, from both industrial and municipal points of view.  On the municipal side, sessions will explore topics including predictive maintenance, the Internet of Things Water, contaminant detection, and water reuse. We will also discuss water’s more industrial applications, including its role in oil & gas, mining, food and beverage, and agriculture.  Claremont Club and Spa in Berkeley

Sept 29 – 30 – Microgrids and Smart Communities conference will address microgrid drivers and initiatives at the national, state, and utility levels; regulatory and policy initiatives that encourage micro grid development; financing opportunities and challenges, and technical aspects. Further, we will introduce the concept of the “Smart Community” and address what the role of a microgrid is within this concept with case studies, presentations, and panel discussions.  Over the next five to eight years, the market for vendors of microgrid-related products and services is estimated to reach around $40 billion.  Fremont Marriott Silicon Valley

Sept 30 – Oct 2 – The 6th Annual Transmission Summit West provides the clearest window into leading utility and merchant transmission executives’ plans for new projects, partnerships and business strategies. They will address the business models, financing trends, strategies and practical lessons being learned in project execution and construction management for new transmission builds and upgrades. The Summit is the place to meet and network with other key stakeholders and find solutions to the problems facing the transmission business.  The Westgate Hotel, San Diego

Sept 30 – Oct 2 – Energy Storage North America is the largest grid storage event in North America focused on market developments and technology integration.  It brings together 1000+ attendees (customers, solution providers and partners) and hosts 40+ conference sessions, workshops and tours focused on the convergence of transportation, distributed, and utility-scale applications.  Concurrent tracks allow attendees a deep dive into the market structures, the policies powering them, and the opportunities to integrate projects of all sizes on the grid.  San Jose Convention Center

Oct 6 – 7 –  Last year’s Cleantech Global Showcase attracted over 400 participants and 70 speakers from 20+ countries.  This year, hundreds of cleantech professionals will again converge in Downtown Los Angeles for GloSho’14. This event will host a high-level group of inventors, entrepreneurs, investors, utility executives, government officials and academic researchers all focused on one goal: accelerating the development and commercialization of clean technology globally.  The Los Angeles Theater Center, Downtown Los Angeles

Oct 7 – 8 – The Green Grid Forum 2014 will bring together respected industry experts to share strategies, best practices, and tools that improve the resource efficiency of information technology and data centers. Oct 9 – The Clean Technology Council presents “Ocean Health to Lunar Landings: How to Compete for the X-Prize” featuring Mike Outmesguine, CEO and Alan DeRossett, CTO of VOXearch.  Mike and Alan are out to win the $2 million dollar Ocean Health XPRIZE with a DYI (Do-It-Yourself) kit for kids and hobbyists that work in Makerspace learning centers around the world.  The team’s first XPRIZE challange was to develop the world’s first Medical Tricorder, based on the science-fiction device. Oct 9 – 10 – The Southern California Energy Summit (previously called the Coachella Valley Energy Summit) is the preeminent forum brining industry and community leaders together to discuss trends, advocate for clean energy issues and highlight the region as the epicenter for renewable energy. Oct 13 – 15 – Demand Response World Forum brings together professionals from around the world to explore the latest auto-DR technologies and strategies for meeting the changing energy landscape of the 21st Century. Topics include VPPs, integrating DER, the future of residential DR, smart thermostats, latest regulatory developments, and more. Oct 20 – 22 – The 6th Biennial Emerging Technologies (ET) Summit hosted by PG&E gathers more than 500 stakeholders in the energy efficiency and demand response emerging technologies sectors for a 2-day interactive conference to learn, ideate and debate the intersection of utility programs, technology, market drivers, customer engagement, policy and implementation in order to impact the advancement and adoption of emerging technologies.  Wyndham Parc 55, San Francisco

Oct 20 – 23 –  The 2014 Solar Power International, the solar industry’s comprehensive educational conference and product exhibition, is presented by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA), whose combined efforts have created world-class events. This event focuses solely on creating an environment that fosters the exchange of ideas, knowledge and expertise for furthering solar energy development in the United States. All conference proceeds support the expansion of the U.S. solar energy market through SEIA’s and SEPA’s year-round research and education activities, as well as SEIA’s advocacy efforts.  Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas

Oct 25 – 26 – A modern take on the traveling circus, STEAM Carnival is an entertainment showcase using high-tech amusement and project-based kits to inspire kids of all ages about science, technology, engineering, art and math. Attractions include a midway loaded with challenging games, interactive experiences, hands-on workshops, contests, prizes and artisanal carnival food. STEAM Carnival leverages kids’ passions for music, fashion, and games to expose them to STEAM disciplines.  Select student participants will have the opportunity to display projects through a variety of exhibitions including a wearable electronics fashion show and a junior arcade.  Two days of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math and fun.  CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles

Oct 27 – 30 – The Green Biz Group’s 2014 VERGE San Francisco is focused on how technology accelerates sustainability solutions across industries and sectors. The event brings together the world’s largest companies, technology innovators, and cities, creating a broad ecosystem of players to accelerate opportunities for business, the environment, and society.
