Contour Energy wins LABJ Patrick Soon-Shiong Innovation Award

Contour Energy Systems, Inc,  has won the second annual 2011 Los Angeles Business Journal Patrick Soon-Shiong Innovation Award. The innovative portable power company commercializing next-generation battery systems is a local company that successfully commercialized technology licensed from a local university.  The annual award acknowledges organizations and executives in southern California who foster economic competitiveness with proven leadership in innovation.

Contour Energy started out as licensed spinout  from a Caltech lab known as CFX Batteries with a $15.2 M Series A investment from CMEA, USVP and Harris & Harris in 2007.  The founding team included Dr. Robert Grubbs, a Nobel Laureate, National Academy of Sciences and Fellow of AAAS.  The company set up shop in Azusa rather than Pasadena when they couldn’t get a permit.  While Carbon, Flourine  and the ratio between them, X, chemistry had been known for 40+ years, it wasn’t until the development of nanomaterials that allowed the original science to be commercialized and differentiates their battery from ubiquitous lithium ion technology.  Earlier this year Contour Energy secured a $14.2 M round, have opened a larger facility to hold manufacturing equipment and have a seasoned management team led by Joe Fisher.
